YOGA FAVOURITES Being trained and certified at Yoga Vidya Dham Ashram in Nasik City, India, Carmella’s training came from the lineage of Swami Sivananda Saraswati. Swami Sivananda was born in Tamil Nadu, India, in 1887. After serving as a medical doctor, he renounced his practice and went to Rishikesh where he was initiated into Dashnami sannyasa (Hindu ascetic) in 1924 by Swami Vishwananda Saraswati. He toured extensively through India, inspiring people to practise yoga and lead a divine life. During his lifetime, he guided thousands of disciples and aspirants all over the world and authored over 200 books. Swami Satyananda was born in Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1923. In the 1943 he met Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh and adopted an ascetic way of life.  In 1955 he left his guru’s Ashram to live as a wandering mendicant and later founded the International Yoga Fellowship in 1956 and the Bihar School of Yoga in 1963. Over the next 20 years he toured internationally and authored over 80 books. In 1984 he founded Sivananda Math, a charitable institution for aiding rural development, and the Yoga Research Foundation. Swami Niranjanananda was born in Madhya Pradesh, India, in 1960. At the age of 4 he joined the Bihar School of Yoga and was initiated at the age of 10. He travelled overseas and toured many countries for the next 11 years. In 1983 he was recalled to India and appointed President of Bihar School of Yoga. He has authored over 20 books and guides national and international yoga programs. Carmella’s guru, Yogacharya Vishwas Mandlik, was initiated by Swami Niranjanananda and joined Yoga Vidya Dham in 1979. He was born in Nasik City, India, in 1944 and graduated as an electrical engineer in 1967. After a career as an engineer, he retired from the business and adopted Yogic Education as his life mission. You do not need to cut out meat to be healthy, of course, but it is interesting stuff to read about and maybe even experiment with. www.goveg.com www.skinnybitch.net www.fatfreevegan.com www.happycow.net The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) is over 100 years old and has been an advocate for young, old, pregnant, unemployed, and abused women everywhere. After volunteering with the YWCA as a karma yoga teacher in Calgary, Carmella is forever touched by the work they do.  Other than providing updated gyms for the public and residences for women in need, they also help to protect women from violence, aid in child care, and support women’s economic security. YWCA Canada conducts research and develops policy recommendations on emerging issues. They engage the public, media, and decision-makers on how issues and trends affect women and girls.
